From Nicolas Cage to Ryan Gosling: Ghost Rider's Road Back to the MCU

The rider is back. But this time, it feels different.

For years, Ghost Rider has been one of Marvel's biggest unanswered questions. Fans have watched Spider-Man, Wolverine, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men find their way into Marvel Studios' plans while the Spirit of Vengeance remained on the sidelines.

 

Now, that's changed.

 

Marvel Studios has officially confirmed Ryan Gosling as the MCU's Ghost Rider, with Shawn Levy directing and a release currently planned for 2028. For comic collectors, this isn't simply another casting announcement. It may be the beginning of Marvel's supernatural era. A character whose time may finally have arrived, Ghost Rider has always occupied a unique place within Marvel Comics.

He's never quite belonged alongside Spider-Man or the Avengers, yet he's crossed paths with almost everyone: Demons, Doctor Strange, Blade, The Midnight Sons, The Punisher and even the Hulk.

With Marvel continuing to expand darker corners of the MCU through projects such as Werewolf by Night, Moon Knight and Agatha All Along, Ghost Rider finally feels like the missing piece of the puzzle. Whether Marvel is building towards Midnight Sons or something entirely different remains unknown, but collectors are paying attention.

The Nicolas Cage years deserve more credit

Long before interconnected universes dominated cinema, Nicolas Cage introduced Johnny Blaze to a generation of fans.

The 2007 Ghost Rider film and its sequel Spirit of Vengeance were never critical darlings, but they developed a loyal following and perhaps that's no surprise, as Cage has been one of Hollywood's biggest comic fans for decades. His famous Superman collection helped inspire the name of his son, Kal-El, and his passion for comics has never been hidden. Earlier this year a copy of Action Comics #1 in a CGC Grade 9.0, previously owned by Cage, sold for a World Record $15M!

Looking back, those films feel less like failed experiments and more like the first serious attempt to bring Marvel's supernatural world to the screen. Today, they're being viewed through a very different lens.

Nicolas Cage returns... to CGC

The timing couldn't be much better as CGC has announced an exclusive private signing with Nicolas Cage, giving collectors the opportunity to have books signed by the actor who defined Ghost Rider for an entire generation.

Both Collector Cartel members and non-members can now begin preparing submissions through Bear Maximum.

Pricing is:

* £320 – Nicolas Cage signature
* £410 – Signature with character name or personalisation
* £510 – Signature plus an inscription of up to eight words

This is on the website now, with submissions already being accepted.

Ghost Rider isn't the only possibility either

Collectors may wish to consider Spider-Man Noir appearances, Kick-Ass material or other Nicolas Cage-related books that hold personal significance.

Could Ghost Rider become Marvel's next big corner of the MCU?

This is where the conversation becomes particularly interesting.

Everything below should be treated as speculation, unconfirmed Marvel plans.

Nicolas Cage

Now that Marvel has embraced the multiverse, many fans wonder whether Nicolas Cage could make a surprise appearance alongside Ryan Gosling. Nothing has been announced, but audiences have shown enormous enthusiasm for legacy actors returning to iconic roles. Could Marvel find room for both? It's certainly easier to imagine today than it was five years ago.

Gabriel Luna

Another name regularly mentioned is Gabriel Luna.

His Robbie Reyes quickly became one of the standout characters in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., introducing a completely different Ghost Rider to television audiences.

Marvel has not announced any plans involving Luna, but if multiple Ghost Riders eventually appear, his return would undoubtedly excite many fans.

Sam Elliott

Sam Elliott's Carter Slade remains one of the most memorable parts of the original Ghost Rider film. His mysterious departure left plenty of unanswered questions, and fans continue to speculate about a possible return. Again, there is no official indication this will happen.

It's simply another fascinating possibility if Marvel fully embraces the supernatural side of its universe.

What about Spider-Man Noir?

Perhaps the most intriguing possibility isn't another Ghost Rider at all. Nicolas Cage has already returned to one of Marvel's darkest characters by portraying Spider-Man Noir in live action. Imagine, purely as a thought experiment, a multiversal story where Ryan Gosling's Ghost Rider crossed paths with Cage's Spider-Man Noir.

No announcement exists. No leak has suggested it. But it's exactly the sort of crossover that would once have sounded ridiculous before Spider-Man: No Way Home and Deadpool & Wolverine proved almost anything is possible.

The first appearance of Johnny Blaze as Ghost Rider remains one of Marvel's most important Bronze Age books.

Remember, buying should always be driven by collecting goals and careful research, not simply because a film has been announced.

One of the biggest winners from this announcement may not actually be Ghost Rider.

If Marvel decides to develop its supernatural universe, characters such as Blade, Doctor Strange, Moon Knight, Werewolf by Night and Ghost Rider suddenly become much more closely connected.

That makes Midnight Sons one of the most interesting teams for collectors to monitor over the coming years.
